The Fourth Sunday of Advent (and why we didn't decorate the Christmas tree at Smultron Cottage)

 Today is the day!
The Fourth Sunday of Advent
And we are going to decorate
The Christmas tree at Smultron Cottage

Not quite yet, Kiki says
First I have to be done
With all the Christmas cleaning
The making, baking and wrapping
More baking, more making? I ask
Because that's what we have been doing
The Second Sunday of Advent already
Yep, Kiki says.

That's how Christmas is like
At Smultron Cottage
And I must not forget
To clean the windows!
And then Kiki starts threading up
Ginger bread hearts on a red string
And then she puts wee candles
In tiny candle holders

But when are we going to decorate
The Christmas tree? I ask
Not quite yet, Kiki replies
First I have to make the bed!
And then we put on new bed linen
The white one with red stripes
And I sweep up all the fir needles
While Kiki is fluffing up the pillows

Are we now going to decorate
The Christmas tree? I ask
Not quite yet, Kiki replies
First I have to write the last letters!
And then Kiki writes Christmas letters
Teeny tiny ones, and I am not even sure
That the postman will be able to read
Kiki's handwriting (but I keep quiet)

But now we are going to decorate
The Christmas tree! I say, eagerly
Not quite yet, Kiki replies
First I have to put up a ginger bread garland
Because nothing is better
Than to spend Christmas in bed
Nibbling on a gingerbread
And wiggling with all ten toes

But, I say, (quite impatiently now)
Before it is Christmas
We really have to decorate the Christmas tree!
It is the Fourth Sunday of Advent already!
But Kiki isn't listening
She is stirring the rice pudding on the stove
And then she puts up another paper star
And counts all alder cones in the basket

And then I all of the sudden remember
That grandfather wanted to crack nuts
With me today in the afternoon!
Got to go! I say, in great haste

Kiki is busy with her Christmas cleaning
With the making, baking and wrapping
But maybe tomorrow, maybe
We are going to decorate the Christmas tree!

 ***

A merry Fourth Sunday of Advent everyone!

Like Kiki, we have been making and baking, cleaning and wrapping. But the good thing about Christmas is that it comes nonetheless, even if the laundry isn't done, the windows aren't clean and only half of the food is prepared. What matters is that there are enough candles and gingerbread (preferably as a garland above the bed) and fir twigs - and everything else will turn out all right in the end!

Warmly,

Juliane
